Murder with Chocolate Tea

Chocolate Lovers Unite! At Daisy’s Tea Garden, the featured tea this month is Chocolate Tea which Daisy serves with a variety of sweet treats. It seems to go particularly well with chocolate chip cookies.
As always, delicious foods from soups and salads to high tea are served at Daisy’s teahouse. Daisy has a lot of things going on in Murder with Chocolate Tea. She and Jonas are planning their wedding, and she has put one of her enthusiastic employees, April, in charge of a tea celebrating a local covered bridge. Most importantly for the reader, Daisy is trying to solve a recent murder and a cold case. Is there a connection between the two? Daisy finds herself in danger as she draws closer to discovering the truth.
Daisy’s friends and family have their share of difficulties. Her daughter Jazzi is preparing to go to college. Her daughter Vi’s husband is overworking and over stressing over his new job. Aunt Iris still has two suitors who are getting impatient. Her kitchen manager’s boyfriend has begun a true crime podcast. He endangers many in his efforts to discover the truth including those he interviews.
As you can see, there is a lot going on in this mystery. Many friends of the the murder victims are suspected of the crimes, but we don’t get to know them as well as I would like. It’s mind boggling to watch Daisy juggle work and home commitments, but with the help of supportive employees and relatives, she manages well.

2. The author does a good job of reintroducing characters for the new reader. It could be a standalone, but there is a lot of backstory to be gained by reading the whole series.

There are a lot of appealing aspects to Vicki Delany’s Tea by the Sea Mystery Series, but most important is the way the various aspects (setting, characters, and plot) are integrated. They share the focus of the books as they support the mysteries, but the author allows each feature to have prominence at various times.
The setting is the backdrop of Cape Cod Bay and the Victorian-era mansion Grandma Rose purchased to transform into a B&B along with a cottage on the same property that becomes a tea room for her granddaughter Lily to operate. The gardens on the grounds are rated at the top of visitor attractions for North Augusta, and the view from the cliffs is outstanding. The reader can not miss the ambiance.
Characters, especially the investigative trio of Lilly, Rose, and Lily’s best friend Bernie draw readers into the story. Lily works hard as the owner of the tea room and the pastry chef at both the B&B and the tea room. Rose will keep you smiling with her energy, enthusiasm, and ability to use her advanced age to her advantage when necessary. Bernie, the “Warrior Princess,” is in a never-ending loop in writing her first novel because she keeps changing her plot and characters. She reminds me of a butterfly flitting from one idea to another.
In Trouble is Brewing, the characters and setting do not outdo the mystery. When Lily agrees to host a bridal shower at the tea room, she doesn’t anticipate an anonymous prank gift that upsets the bride, the death of a guest at the B&B, or the negative feuding of the two families involved in the wedding. The action keeps coming and the clues lead to a variety of suspects. I definitely didn’t see the identity of the murderer before the author revealed it.

Notes: 1. #5 in the Tea by the Sea Mystery Series but Delany writes so well that new readers are updated almost seamlessly.
2. A book focused on a tea room and a B&B must have recipes, so the author includes recipes for Banana Bread with Walnuts, Egg Salad Sandwiches with Herby Mayonnaise, and Maple Pecan Squares.

Afternoon tea is not known for being diet friendly.” “Want me to run out to the garden and collect some dead leaves?…Is compost fat-free?”
“What were you doing in her place for two hours, if not helping cook?” Simon asked. “Girl talk,” Bernie said. “More mysterious than the origins of the universe,” Matt said.

Lily, a trained pastry chef, is hard at work making breakfasts for her Grandmother Rose’s B & B and her own tea room on the same property. While shopping for more china tea cups in an antique store, she finds a cute children’s tea set with Beatrix Potter decorations. It costs more than she should pay, but it is unusual and so she purchases it. She has bought more than she bargained for; there is something important hidden in the set’s box.
There are a lot of surprises that Lily truly doesn’t go looking for including the arrival of her old boyfriend and his new wife. He is not a very nice person and immediately makes flirtatious advances on Lily. There is a murder outside the tea house that involves a formerly wealthy family and all kinds of machinations.
I enjoyed my visit to Lily’s tea room which is picturesque with a view of Cape Cod Bay. Rose is quite a character using her age to her advantage in the informal investigations. Lily’s friend Bernie, an aspiring writer, is always ready to help along with her boyfriend Matt, already an accomplished author. Lily’s romantic interest is Simon, a gardener from England. He doubles as a landscape artist; he is handsome, charming, and knows his way around a kitchen.
I liked Steeped in Malice so much that I am going to dive immediately into the next book in the series. I need something relaxing this week and Vicki Delany’s cozy mysteries are just the ticket.

Seeing the signs of leaving, Éclair stretched and came out from under the kitchen table, stubby tail wagging, ears up. She spends the mornings under the table, hoping I’ll drop something tasty. I never do, but her optimism could serve as an inspiration to us all.

Sadie and Grayson find a food critic’s body under a cask at Grayson’s brewery. It soon becomes clear that someone is trying to frame Grayson for the murder. He goes into hiding, and Sadie, owner of the Inkwell pub, tries to find the real murderer. She is also dealing with maintaining the Inkwell’s booth at the local food and drink festival, and running her business during this top tourist season. Add to that her mother’s first visit to Sadie’s new home and business in Vermont. Sadie wants her mother’s approval on her new life and her new boyfriend who is currently on the run from law enforcement.
I have enjoyed all of the cozy mysteries in The Literary Pub Mystery Series by Sarah Fox, but this one was disappointing for me. The plot was well-conceived, but the execution was repetitious. Just how many times do I want to read about Sadie drinking coffee at her apartment, at her pub, and at the local coffee shop? How many times does the author need to verbalize Sadie’s emotional distress over missing her boyfriend? They were only separated for a little over a week. Sadie, in her efforts to clear Grayson, does a number of stupid, dangerous and illegal things. One example is stealing a hotel key card, breaking into a guest’s room, and returning the key card—actions which she repeats! Grayson purposely does not tell Sadie where he will hide out so she can truthfully relate that to the police when she is questioned. Despite the police having surveillance over her pub and apartment, she works as hard at discovering his location as she does at uncovering the murderer, putting herself and Grayson in even more threat of being arrested unless the murderer finds them first.
The whodunnit part of the book is interesting and surprising, but not really worth the read for me. I want to read the next book in the series as I hope this was a one off.

When we left the cidery a few minutes later, I had a snack in hand to assuage any physical hunger pangs that might strike, but my appetite for clues remained unsatisfied.
Silence settled over our table, but it was a silence fraught with tension and apprehension. My mother stared at me from across the table and I had to fight to keep from sliding down any farther. I was already in danger of falling off my seat.

Callie Aspen and her great-aunt Iphy, who own the book-themed tea shop Book Tea, are managing a Valentine-themed fundraiser for lovely Haywood Hall. Callie is supervising the whole event with its many volunteers, and Iphy is providing her beautiful tea creations.
Unfortunately, there is a murder at the tea, and a long lost acquaintance of Iphy’s is a major suspect. The book includes several mysteries. Iphy is quite secretive about her relationship with the baritone guest singer. There are a pair of women overheard plotting revenge. No one seems to like the murder victim.
Callie risks her relationship with Ace, acting sheriff, to insure her aunt’s safety. Both ladies act rather rashly and contrary to Ace’s advisement as they investigate.
I enjoyed Joy Avon’s In Cold Camomile but never quite felt the thrill of the investigation. It is clear that Callie and Iphy are overstepping their bounds and that there will be negative consequences. This mystery is diverting, but not gripping. I look forward to the next book in the A Tea and a Read series as several personal relationships are at the cusp of transition.

Like the main character, Callie Aspen, the plot of Sweet Tea and Secrets seems to exist in limbo in Joy Avon’s latest cozy mystery. Callie has quit a job she loves as an international tour guide and moved back to Heart’s Harbor to help her Aunt Iphy run Book Tea, the local tea shop. She is waiting for a local rental to be restored to livable condition. She doesn’t actually contribute much help to the tea room in this book. To top it off, Deputy Falk, an additional enticement when she decided to move, seems less than enthusiastic about Callie’s return to town.
The plot follows the same erratic pacing and intensity as we see in Callie’s personal life. Callie gets pulled into the investigation of a cold murder case that revolves around a web of lies. It is hard for Callie and the reader to know which characters are reliable. My interest would ramp up, and then I would find myself wondering when the book would end. The ending was a surprise in regards to the mystery, and the author didn’t leave any loose ends. There were a number of subplots that were interesting but sometimes too distracting when acting as red herrings. I was glad Callie’s personal relationship with Falk showed forward progress. I would read another book in the series, but I hope it will have more of a focus on the tea room like the first books in the series do.
