Linda Higgins has a passion for good teaching which she defines as teaching that reaches the hearts, souls, and minds of the learner. During the last few years of her career, she became very uncomfortable with the data driven mentality imposed by the administration in her school district and by so many others marching to the beat of the CCSS drum. During thirty-four years of teaching covering all grade levels and using the curriculums of four different states, Linda’s perspective has never wavered. Students and teachers both need opportunities to be creative and explore through a variety of interests and modalities.
Because teachers are very busy people, these blog posts will be brief, usually recording midnight thoughts about the direction of education. She hopes this blog will encourage others who sometimes feel as if they were cast as “The Lone Dissenter” in a grade B movie.

When I first started my blog posts two years ago, the subtitle was “The Importance of Reading with Children at an Early Age”. I think you and I agree on this critical issue and on encouraging the creative spirit within all students.

Absolutely agree! My original subtitle focused on developmentally appropriate education, but I have since expanded my topics. There is nothing more important than reading, and teaching and learning should be creative with the end goal of creating life long learners.

Hi Linda, I hadn’t read your About page yet and so happy to meet another educator! I see that your MS is from CAL in Reading. Both my brother and cousin have their specialties in reading, both now with PhDs and working in the field. I teach at the university level as a lecturer–best job ever!

Hi Linda; just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the fact that you take time and read my posts and make thoughtful comments as well. I need to do better at following you and others that do. This is a new year and with it are new challenges. One challenge is how to navigate WP; it’s made many changes that I really don’t like. I just used to go there and start typing. I used to know how to change my fonts, get them colored and I don’t get it with the “blocks” and can’t find anything, especially if I want something single spaced. I have to trick it. Know what I mean? Oh, but this isn’t about me! I didn’t know that you had an educational background and everything(?) Good for you!!! But I think if I remember right that we both LOVE to read and this year it’s on my “Bucket List” to do more reading…get myself a Kindle because I haven’t gotten to the Library and I used to avidly go because of the atmosphere or the Coffee Shops….I could just spend hours reading, researching, browsing; all that good stuff! So kick me in the butt if I don’t keep up with you in your posts, ok?

I enjoy your posts, but we do have to make choices with our time. When you post or comment, great! When other parts of life take over, we have to acknowledge that and move on. I know what you mean about WordPress. I just don’t have time to play around with it. When I was still teaching, I used various programs and could change up all kinds of things. I haven’t found WordPress to be very user friendly that way. So, I just use the same format for all my review posts so that I can focus on content. Thanks for reading when you can.😉
